Funny that you bring this up. From my recent work with Chris Alexander,
and from reading his book, I've been thinking about this. 

The short version of the design philosophy put forward in his book is
"make it beautiful. It'll work". 

(hey, please don't fall over that single sentence - I'm summarizing
almost 500 pages of reasoning and argumentation here - go read the book
;-))

On of the articles on my draftboard deals with that - it's called
'Beautiful Code', and, if I ever get around writing it, discusses the
importance of esthetics in programming. 

Nice that I'm not the only one thinking in this direction.
