Hello all-
I'm not sure if this was mentioned at all, but I ran some benchmarks on a
G5- the campus computer store just got some in. They only had the 1.6 GHz
model.
The numbers are below. I was a bit surprised in the performance of the
G5- it seemed to be a little slower in bytecodes/second/MHz than I had
hoped, scoring lower than all three chips I tested, P3, P4 and G4. I'm
guessing that this has less to do with crappy G5 performance and more with
a complete lack of optimization in OS X (32-bit) and in the VM.
I used a VM version of 3.4.0 beta 2 on the Macs- is there a VM that's been
optimized better for the G5? If so let me know, I'll rerun them.
Here are some numbers, all tests done in Dynapad R2, based on 3.4:
Machine BC/sec Sends/sec BC/s/MHz Sends/s/MHz
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.6 GHz G5 134665965 4643712 84166 2902
256 MB
OS X 10.2.6
VM 3.4.0b2
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dual 500 G4 53244592 1807071 106489 3614
256 MB RAM
OS X 10.2.6
VM 3.4.0b2 [1]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.4 GHz P4 208469055 4915728 86862 2048
256 MB RAM
Win 2K
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
800 MHz P3 79552517 2238185 99441 2797
384 MB RAM
Win XP
Note: [1] in the per MHz I calculated, I divided by 500 MHz rather than
1000 on the DUal 500 MHz G4; Squeak would only use a tiny bit of the
second CPU if anything at all.
Regards,
Aaron
