Developer Workspace grabs the whole screen

Yes, from the desktop menu, select "appearance...". This brings up a
submenu with the entries "full screen on" and "full screen off". Toggle
being-full-screen with those. You can also halo-drag those onto the
desktop as buttons for easy access.
