This "madness" could help us to create a more living system:

"One key idea is to keep the system running while testing and
especially while making changes." (Alan Kay)

How could this be done without having tests by default in the image?

Let alone all the documentation aspects of tests. Each of them serves 
as an
example how to use its method under test. This is very valuable 
information both for
newcomers, maintainers and enhancers. I believe this information
should be leveraged and extended and not pushed away.

Certainly I agree that is should be easy to remove the tests,
as I am sure Stef and all the other proposers also do.

Though I firmly believe, that if you do not need to change your system,
it is basically dead, and if you need to change it, you need tests.
