Hmm, not sure about that ... On Mac OS X I can have one text selection
in each of my windows ... I can even select some text in this text pane 
in Mail,
and then select some stuff in the Object textfiel and have both of them 
selected.

But you're right about visual feedback ... maybe we could upon losing 
focus change the
color of the selection to inform the user.
