Ok, this was something of a false alarm... see my post on the "Can't 
ping SM..." thread.

Update 5784 was *a* source of that particular problem, however, 
upgrading to a newer OS X Carbon VM fixed the problem.

3.6.1Beta3 OS X VM + 3.7alpha-5764 image:  pingServer returns true
3.6.1Beta3 OS X VM + 3.7alpha-5764 image + update 5784:  pingServer 
returns false
3.7.2Beta1 OS X VM + 3.7alpha-5764 image + update 5784:  pingServer 
returns true

So I think for now, we could keep update 5784 and incorporate your fixes.
