[OT] Mac OS-X question

In a terminal window (i.e. at the Unix shell prompt), I have a machine
(which is not mine) that I have to type <option>+'/' to get the '/'
character. Is there a way to make it so you don't need to use the
<option> key in the course of typeing things like:

ls -lr | fgrep -n ".txt" | more

This option key thing is pretty annoying.

                Thanks.
