It depends on the question.
If you are asking about purchacing, you always buy the "current"
generation of technology.

If you are asking about maintaining an existing system, you only ask "Is
it still doing the job?"

In that sense both my 486 and my Athlon 800 are still useful (though
seldom used) machines. (I wish my 486 was still reliable and supported
both it's best CPU and video card at the same time..)
