Is the bug specific to the 2.6 kernel?  I'm on 2.4.  (I'm not sure if
your message was directed to Lex with his 2.6 specific problems).

Nothing indicates I'm approaching 2G (unless 1G is considered
approaching 2G); would the bug have any relevance to me?  I certainly
have big collections.
