And I expect to upgrade to an OpenGL 1.4 compatible Radeon card soon. (9250)

The issue here is that I refuse to support hardware vendors that aren't
supported by open source drivers.

It is quite simple. I don't want to be locked into any hardware or
software platform.

I hate linux and I don't want to be forced to use it in order to get
reasonably decient hardware support.

While I want to see more competition in the graphics market, I cannot
buy a nivida card until I am certain that I won't be forced to use
either Linux or Windows for the next ten years... -- No exageration, One
of the two graphics cards in this machine is 6 years old (purchaced new)
and not scheduled for replacement... Actually, its an ATI mach64-family
card on which I have never been able to use 3D acceleration due to
software issues.

Therefore, my primary buying criteria is wheather I will be able to use
it with Linux now and with an OS of my choice in the future.
