generally I agree, but:
 - you might not want to rely on opengl support then, or
   fix opencroquet to reduce the necessary feature set a bit
 - you could help that guy that builds an opensource nvidia driver
   with opengl support for openbeos - port it for a start (but
   don't expect any graphics stuff on linux to be nice to you), or
   extend it to fit your necessary subset of opengl (those consumer
   cards don't support all the stuff anyway) - and I say "you could
   help" solely because you complain. "if you want it done right,
   you better do it yourself" etc
 - closed source drivers are particularily nasty on linux because
   they couldn't build a stable API if their live depended on it.
   solaris doesn't have this problem.
