Problems with xfce-4 under linux

I got tired of waiting for KDE to launch on my Gentoo linux laptop and
decided to try xfce. It's quite speedy but with one problem: squeak
doesn't work. I can't desribe the problem precisely. What appears to
be happening, visually, is that squeak's window opens and then
continually shrinks. A maximized Squeak window simply flashes
continually (redrawing the background in blank and off-white) without
shrinking. I'm running:

3.7-7 #2 Tue Apr 5 20:43:56 EDT 2005 gcc 3.3.5
Squeak3.7 of '4 September 2004' [latest update: #5989]
Linux localhost 2.6.10-gentoo-r6 #1 Sun Mar 13 12:55:03 UTC 2005 i686
Mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 - M CPU 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
default plugin location: /usr/local/lib/squeak/3.7-7/*.so

The VM and image are fine under KDE. Has anyone seen this problem or
have any idea how I could help to debug it?

David
