When updating your image via MCConfigurations the latest versions are  
usually "loaded", meaning local changes are discarded, you get  
exactly the "official" version. If this preference is set, the latest  
version is "merged" in, the local changes are preserved.

If there are no local changes, both methods are equivalent. But if  
you want to maintain local changes to a package, this allows to do so.
