Well, there is an "initiative" to build a sort-of-Smalltalk to  
assembly/machine code compiler, via LLVM, in addition to some code to  
generate Objective-C (which, after all, is really just syntactically- 
sugared C).  All part of Objective-Smalltalk, aka Arches.
