No.

Even in rosetta emulation the intelmac vm was at least as fast as my 
powerbook g4.

Try a different image.

Make sure that the image you use is set to:
-32 bit colors; set monitor to 32 bit for best performance
-fullscreen off; the intelmac VMs can't do fullscreen
