<Ken Causey>...this subject was an important one early in the history of the
OED and even earlier English dictonaries (to be descriptive and not
prescriptive)</Ken Causey>

Prescriptive:Descriptive::Static-Typing:Dynamic-Typing

Well, not really, but there is a somewhat-analogous contrast: Authoritarian
control vs. organic collaboration. English works as a communicaions medium
no worse than do languages with strict, authoritarian control over their
vocabulary and syntax--the dire predictions of grammarians and language
purists notwithstanding. Smalltalk programs work just as well, if not
better, than those written in statically-typed languages--the dire
predictions of the static-type constraint fundamentalists notwithstanding.
