Back in 1999 Claus Gittinger from exept.de  
added Java support to their Smalltalk/X system. They were able
to run Java and Smalltalk on the same VM using the unmodified
JDK packages.

Very interesting since they could debug Java within the
Smalltalk/X debugger, inspect Java objects in Smalltalk inspectors
or run applets within ST/X windows and the UI Builder.

Remember: it was 1999 where most Java guys were used to vi/emacs
environments for development.
