I'll second this...if you haven't looked at Cuis, it is definitely worth the
look.  Of all the squeak distributions out there, this is probably my
favorite.  It's small, fast, and gets back to the basics of Smalltalk.  I
think it would be a good reference point on which to base other
distributions.
