[squeak-dev] [Squeak 4.0] Anyone know much about the format of the sources/changes files?

yes, otherwise they get tagged with meta-data as being text files to be opened with bbedit. 
versus iconized with squeak change and source icons and clicking them would open your 
primary Squeak VM.
