A hunch for Linux: interrupts from mouse/ mouse-driver trigger early 
return of system calls (with errors EINTR/EAGAIN) and the surrounding 
code simply fails silently rather than do an immediate retry. IIRC 
*any/all* sys calls can be interrupted in this way.
