Well, this gets both better and more confusing.

Today I thought I'd spend  a few post-lunch minutes trying it out and making a good description for you but
a) this time it did actually update the entry on the Squeakmap web page
b) it still failed with a timeout during the process; according to the debugger it was trying to POST the 40-50 char description/version string.

After updating SM it was possible to install the package into a clean image, so good news there at least. But timing out on 50 chars seems a bit feeble.
