I tested this in the full system browser and in the heirarchy browser. Didn't have any problems (even when browsing ProtoObject). It worked as advertised and since it comes with a preference to disable it, it seems like a good candidate for either a SqueakMap enhancement package or inclusion in the base. Thanks Ned.
