[BUG][FIX] TimeProfileBrowser ( [er][sm][et] update is a good fix, recommend approval )

The change set in Robert Hirschfeld's update ("improved change set
attached") addresses the reported problem, and is simpler than the
original. It uses an exception handler to catch various un-parseable
conditions (rather than several "if" cases), so it should be more
resistant to future bugs. OK for approval IMHO.
