I forgot to mention :

motivating artifact. It was a real automobile, but anyone could take it
apart and put it back together.

This has been one of my motivations too. I have experimented with some 
simple projects that I build and give to him to take apart and put back 
together. We did this over the weekend with a "Prisoner's Dilemma" 
simulation. Was fun for us both.
