Aha! Carlos, you do understand Sugar, much better than those who merely
know how to operate it. This visual learning method, without formulas,
words, and calculations, is what I have been proposing for some time, and
now have started implementing, along with Tony Forster, Peter Hewitt, Alan
Kay, and others. We must talk about kindergarten calculus, about
symmetries, about all sorts of things.
You know how to make a curve that is not a circle, but that rolls on a
flat plane with its top at a constant height, don't you? This has
commercial applications. There are many other such examples that can be
demonstrated in one or another of the Sugar tools.
This kind of thinking (square wheels on an undulating road) has many
important applications in manufacturing. For example, sharp-edged
semiconductor masks produce fuzzy diffracted edges on the IC, but just the
right fuzziness in the mask edges produces sharp, thin lines on the IC.
For another, if you grind two glass blanks together with the appropriate
grit in between, and with frequent random rotations, you produce two
spherical surfaces, one slightly convex and one slightly concave. But if
you grind three surfaces together two at a time, with frequent changes
through all three pairings, they all necessarily come out flat.
