Reflexionemos."

Letter from uruguayan educator Rosamel Ramírez, of Durazno, Uruguay, recently published by Uruguay´s "El País" newspaper.

"I am the Teacher Director of a public school. May I say my responsibility is to lead a 200-pupil, 10-schoolroom institution. The school also counts with a community teacher, a Ceibal Support teacher, a Physical Education professor. From my position I have been able to observe the great influence the teacher´s attitude has [in the end results]. Lately, we don´t hear much on this subject.

Days go by without any major shocks in those classrooms where the teacher takes a serious stand. I mean "serious stand" in contrast to the position of a friend of the students. I do not mean, the position of an enemy. This is true even with groups that are difficult to handle.

The message I want to send from here for the young educators, who are starting their teaching careers with the intention of staying in them is to adopt an attitude in accordance with their position [as educators]. To be an educator is not the same as to be a clothes salesperson in a street market; no intention of putting down any of these salespersons. To be an educator is to be a guide, the conductor of a human group. The idea is to offer certain indications to show a path or several paths, so the children may build their own roads.

It is not an easy task. It is not the same attitude that used to be taken in 1970, 1980, 1990 or even in 2000. It is different. There are some details however, like the teacher´s self-confidence that should not change. I mean the conviction that what he or she wants to teach, is correct. I mean not getting overly emotionally involved with the students.

Since the time when it was misunderstood the teacher should attend the students from all aspects, the school as an institution is losing its content and its form. Teachers have to teach! Students have to learn! What is it that has to be taught and learned? Knowledge: Concepts, procedures and attitudes.

Today, the easiest part is to teach is concepts and procedures. Attitudes are demonstrated and are the most difficult part [to teach]. If educators appear to be weak, lacking self-confidence, unstable, these traits will be transmitted to the class. We are human beings. Being self-confident, strong and stable is not easy. But we have to try, each and every minute.

Let´s not look for solutions outside ourselves only. Let´s think about our attitudes, starting with what we say, our gestures, our body language while we stand in front of the class. [Watch] our speech´s intonation; is it respectful or is it aggressive? Our educational proposals, are they interesting? If we fail with our proposals, there are no computers or interdisciplinary teams that will correct the problem.

Let´s think.
