OK, I'm less convinced that this was the problem I thought it was. I've backed off of my patch (posted on squeak-dev) for a while. It does improve performance slightly but doesn't fix any bugs and really isn't the right way to do this. I'm still working at it (improving network I/O performance) but I'm only beginning to see the light. David
