What are the link failures for you? backtrace and iconv_open and later ft2build.h/freetype?

make LIBS+="-lexecinfo -lutil -lpthread -lm -liconv" LDFLAGS+=-L/usr/local/lib
and with some modifications to FT2Plugin/Makefile I get the rest to compile too.
