Is there a tandard way to attach context menus

Hello all, is there a standard way to attach a context menu to a morph? It's fairly easy to do by checking for yellowButtonPressed and manually firing up a MenuMorph. But it is sufficient to implement #addCustomMenuItems:hand: to get an enhanced Halo menu while #addYellowButtonMenuItemsTo:event: and #hasYellowButtonMenu don't help. Omnibrowser help

Are there some tips/documentation somewhere on getting the most out of the OmniBrowser? The MulitpleSelection browser looks interesting (sort of like the tabbed browser in VisualWorks), but I don't quite understand its behaviour and what method it decides to show in which pane when you move around or save changes. On the same topic, can anyone point me toward how I could add a new item to the class context menu in the OmniBrowser? I want to add a new template selection menu item (like "new class template" and "new trait template") because I have created a method that creates TWO classes at the same time for an Aida application (A domain model class AND its associated WebApp class). Resources with Monticello

Hi all, how does one work with resources (e.g. image files (GIFs, ...)) used in the application when working with Monticello and in general? Right now I have them on my hard drive and they are read live into Squeak when they are needed. Of course, others don't have the files at hand when working in a distributed fashion. What are the best practices in regard of distribution/packaging as well as performance? System Browser: instance vs. class

Hello all, I would like to know what is the practical difference between instance and class in the System Browser. Based on the Abstract Factory example from Alpert's 'Desgin Patterns' book: 1) Not using class: Object subclass: #CarAssembler instanceVariableNames: 'factory' factory: aCarFactory factory := aCarFactory. And in the workspace: assembler := CarAssembler new factory: RenaultFactory new. car := assembler assembleCar. Works fine. 2) Using class: The book example actually uses: Object subclass: #CarAssembler instanceVariableNames: 'factory' CarAssembler class>> using aCarFactory And then in the workspace: assembler := CarAssembler using: RenaultFactory new. car := assembler assembleCar. That also works fine. I see it as a semantic difference only. There must be more than that. The class approach would nevertheless have an instance variable of the name 'factory' in which the wished factory object will be found. That variable is here initialized to a RenaultFactory in both cases. What are the pros and cons of using or not using the class approach ? Thanks, Al

Using Squeak to teach undergrads OOP

Hi, I was talking to one of my Professors about Squeak the other day and I got an mail asking: "I had lunch with several of the other CS faculty yesterday and I brought up your enthusiasm for smalltalk, which I've never used. Some of the faculty panned it because they claimed the I/O features were either poor or nonexistent. [Java will never be displaced as the first language at ............] What is your impression of the I/O abilities of smalltalk? There is much discussion about the need to learn a language with OOP features before Java. I'm still a novice and I actually haven't been able to play with squeak much lately do to other classwork..so rather than blow an opportunity for squeak I thought I'd ask here and see what the pros say. wfpi

Keyboard with accents

Hello, I've downloaded and start using Squeak 3.11 for Linux. The Linux system I'm using has a German keyboard that I'm using to write French. The Linux keyboard configuration does not carry over in Squeak. How can I write comments in French (preferably using the same Linux German mapping) in my Squeak code ? Cheers. Al

How to run a package with Squeak

Hi just started using squeak for Mac OS X, I have installed a package (Aida) and am unsure of how to access it.. I can't find any way to run it or open it from within Squeak... none of the tabs list it and 'world' menu doesn't show anything of the package. UTF-8 Streams

Hi, I don't really know which list to post this on, since I'm having difficulties with Seaside and Squeak concerning string encoding. I think that I may have a possible solution but desperatly need some help on string encoding/converting issues. Can anybody point me toward a good site / document / book that explains how Squeak (3.10.2) handles ByteStrings / WideStrings and how to convert them to and from UTF-8? Many regards, Ole Voß.
