Applications Suite

Since Squeak now has a fast virtual machine, how can one get developers moving to build a full applications suite to obsolete Microsoft, making it unnecessary for any computer user to leave Smalltalk as in the early vision? A team converting open source C projects like Google Chrome and Open Office would be a start. Rant: Over the years I've experienced Microsoft's wrath many times. Starting with the PC Jr, when trying to upgrade it's memory, MS started deleting files. The full experience came with Windows Vista where turning off updates caused many serious errors. I even tried Ubuntu then but coped by keeping the Vista CD in the drive so it would always know it was legal. Microsoft's insidious nature didn't really get my attention until I moved and changing peripherals caused MS to ask for the CD for MS Word, which I can't locate. It quickly decided to not only block further use of MS Word but also disabled the print spooler so no other editor can print. Seeing a similar pattern on a computer I was using as a webpage server (so I chose no updates to keep it running continuously), it appears Microsoft again supplied a virus or malware to require updates by slowly degrading the video. All that past experience and more didn't gel for me until I thought about it. Anyone wanting a reliable computer must migrate away from Microsoft. I found Ubuntu has part of the same problem, with frequent updates causing errors that weren't there before the update. So I'm thinking what computer users really need for every program is readable source code that works which they can update if they choose. The original Smalltalk dream can make it happen. When Squeak can do everything from formatting disks to distant control of a webserver, we can finally say goodbye to the operating system. -- Kirk W. How do i list the execution order of objects inside a method?

Hello, I have this piece of code (taken from ProfSted). How do i programmatically get the order in which the objects are executed by Squeak. I know the order of execution from smalltalk documentation. But what if i need this information inside an app i'm building. tutorial: aTutorialClass lesson: aSelector | tutorial | tutorial := aTutorialClass new. self player tutorial: tutorial. self tutorial: aTutorialClass lessonAt: (tutorial indexOfLesson: aSelector). Shared pieces of text

Hello, I want to have piece of of text (I guess Text object) that is shared among two or more editors. Other pieces of text are not shared. I would appreciate guidelines on how to achieve this in Morphic. Thank you, Vaidotas

How can I play a sound from time A to time B?

So I figured out how to read in a paragraph of text and split it into separate words I can highlight as I read. Still need to play around a bit to handle the different fonts/sizes and kerning. Each word is its own Text object embedded in a Rectangle which "highlights" the words as I read. I set the "highlight timing" by using the keyboard as I record the sound. Then make minor adjustments as needed. This will play fine in reading the whole sentence/paragraph. But I want the user to be able to click on a word and hear that word spoken. Rather than re-record each word, I would like to be able to play a snippet of the recording. So... How do a play a sound recorded in Etoys from time A to time B? Cheers, Stephen

How can I embed an object in another "holder"

Is it just me or is Squeak Universes dead?

I opened the Universe Browser (basic) in my trunk image and hit the 'update list from network' button. I got a predebug window for the failure of primitiveResolverGetAddressInfo as universe apparently tried to fetch http://universes.dnsalias.net/%7Euniverses/repositories/development.packages There doesn't seem to be any DNS record for universes.dnsalias.net which is hosted at dyndns.org, so I guess that hosting account has expired. Should I point Universe at a different URL, or ignore it? David

Mike, Actually my goal is to create something kids and their parents can use. Where a child can tell a story (which is recorded). Then the parent can type it in and the child and/or parent can work together to create the "word highlighted when its read" feature for that particular story. So no SMIL/XML although the article you sent me ( http://apex.infogridpacific.com/dcp/SMIL-production.html#rw-h3_67543-060614…) did give me some good points on the need for highlighting at the phrase/sentence/paragraph levels instead of just word level, depending on the needs of the learner. How can I "highlight" different words in text for a "read-a-long"

Folks, Was talking with Mike Lee about Lubutto project and showing him Event Theatre and he had the great idea of using it to have folks "record books/stories" kids create. We would like something to highlight the words as they are read (not auto-magically, the reader could hit a key to highligh to the next word. But how can I "highlight" (change color/make bold/change backgroung color) for the "next word"? We could break the reading into multiple text objects but that would be time consuming and annoying. Better to have the computer to what its good at and do it for us. Any suggestions on how this could be done? Thanks, Stephen
