box2:/var/www/files permissions update

I was unable to create a "4.5" directory as the "updates" user on box2. Owner and Group permission for the "files" directory (rwxr x r x) belonged to "website". In fact, website does not need write access, just read. "updates" needs write access. So I gave ownership of "files" to the "updates" user. website still has group. - Chris

Box4 Restarted

A small mistake was made and the simplest way to cleanup was to reboot Box4. Chris I think that means you need to restart your ss backup stuff. Sorry about that. Ken

Squeak*.sources on box4

Similarly to the Cogvm package I setup a system to generate a .deb for the sources files and installed it on box4. All of the sources are extracted in and can be linked to from /usr/lib/squeak/sources/. Whenever possible please link to these rather than have your own copy taking up more space on the filesystem. The .deb can be found at /root/localdebs/squeak-sources_4.1-1_all.deb and the build 'system' at /root/localbuild/squeak-sourcesdeb.zip

TightVNC on box4

I could not figure how Chris Muller was constantly logged in all the time. Every time I logged in I typed who to see if anybody's around. The :1 told me that VNC was likely involved, but I didn't realized it was its own process. I was talking to Ken about using Ian's RFB. I recall a conversation about six-eight months about where Levente recommended TightVNC (IIRC). I figure I'll switch to that and we can make it the standard for box4. I assume that this single process can have another port such as 5902/:2 added to it? Chris

Cog VM on box4

After a first crude attempt at a .deb for Cog built and installed yesterday I neatened things up a bit today, built a new .deb, removed the one installed yesterday, and installed the improved one. Further improvement is warranted but I think this will suffice for the moment. As part of this I started moving some stuff out of my home directory into /root/ for more general use/reference. /root/localdebs/ now contains the .deb files of those packages I have built myself and installed. This included cog and djbdns at this point. /root/localbuild/cogdeb.zip contains the 'system' I put together to make the cog package. There is a README in it. Note that as of this version Cog is installed as cogvm and should be run as cogvm (/usr/bin/cogvm). This will make it easier to install a classic interpreter VM and avoid conflict. Ken

Proposed week-long shutdown of Jenkins

Ken and I have been thinking of shutting down Jenkins (OK, it was my idea) for a week after 4.5 is released. The aim is to address hanging issues. A week is a long time from a technical point of view, but it allows people using it to take a break. Mainly we're thinking of Frank here. We're thinking of upgrades, disk usage, necessary and un-necessary builds (if there are any). Basically stopping that world for a week. What do you think, Frank? If you are opposed, then we'll chuck this idea. Chris

Change ssh port?

What does the group think of changing the port that sshd listens on for connections? Yes, I know this is a sort of security by obscurity and is entirely pointless if you are being targeted. But we aren't being targeted yet the net is just full of drive-by connection attempts these days. On a server I administer for a customer I used to get log reports of hundreds and even thousands of the attempted ssh connections each and every day. I got tired of the noise and moved sshd to another port. It has been years now and there has not been a single ssh connection attempt from anyone other than me since I made the change. Now I'm not saying this is any serious problem. And I don't get these sorts of log reports on the Squeak servers currently, so this is not addressing any noise I'm dealing with. But I'm sure all of the Squeak servers are being hit with connection attempts constantly, probably more than the other server I deal with since it is in no way public. At some point there is a tiny possibility that one of the connection attempts will properly guess both a username and a password (and shame on that person for using such a simple password if it happens :) ), sort of the million monkey theory. Anyway this is something I've considered but of course it would affect everyone who sshs to the servers and so I can't just make such a change unilaterally. If you are in favor of this change suggest a number that might be relevant to Squeakers and easy to remember, preferably <= 1024, if you can think of one. Ken

While I've been availing myself of cheap Chilean chardonnay, Ken has again solved the problem. If people would like now to register for the webteam list, please do. For the past year I've received "bounce" emails which I routed to trash (15K emails listed in each). So, email doesn't stop when you leave GNU Mailman for, oh, a couple of years. The caches are now cleared. All hail, Ken! Chris

I went into box2 and looked in the copious directories that are Mailman. I looked in the mbox for webteam list with mutt, which was the long way around to seeing my message has appeared in the archive webpage. I'm assuming it went out to members. The admin panel has opened up too. The settings say Frank should have received a new member email. Provided that I don't have to personally vet every potential new member. Hmmm... 32 members. Alphabetical. No Shearar. No, it's by email so his listing would be under F. There is no F. I guess there're hasn't been a need for it so far. I'm not sure where the "pending member" pen or "accept all who want to register" switch is. It flaking again, so I guess that's it for now. Chris
