[Etoys] Opening .pr error

Hello, everyone! Me and a colleague of mine were building a lesson (for children) in Etoys. She sent me the project and I successfully opened and edited it. I sent her my changes and she told me she couldn't open it. I tried on my OLPC laptop (B2, C18, XO 502) and it worked. Then I reinstalled XO 406 stable version on my laptop and retried to open; this time I coulnd't open the project. I made the changes on my PC running squeak with the latest etoys.imageprovided. She has XO 406 and I reinstalled it too. On this system it doesn't even open. Aren't .pr files portable between (let's say..) different versions of Squeak/Etoys? Please help me. What do I have to do so children can have this kind of problem? Is there a method I can convert my .pr to one specfic to an older version of Etoys, present in the XO 406 system? Thus when saving, it creates a new entry in the journal rather than updating the existing one. [Etoys] Building rpm (Re: Fwd: Trial 3)

Hi Bert, I have followed http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Etoys_RPM_and_XO_bundle and it worked in etoys side. But when making squeak rpm, I got this error message. ----- takashi@localhost:~/src/.../source/squeak% ./makerpm make: *** No rule to make target `dist-src'. Other than that there still is a lot of things that need to be put into place for proper system integration: - keep etoys working after security is enabled. Etoys will have to request many security capabilities: networking, read-only access to images, sounds, movies, etc. in the datastore, camera, microphone, not sure what else. We may need to hook up to dialogs provided by Sugar for loading these files. - rewrite collaboration to properly announce sharing via presence service, allow joining and leaving of people. Allow project sharing (that is, transmit a project to the other parties when they join). Use Tubes for sending/receiving packets, which will take care of routing (it's not yet clear we will be guaranteed to get a routable IPv6 address). Allow sharing of more than one etoys instance (currently the second instance will fail as we try to open a socket on the same host port again) - or at least provide a proper notification. - improve old and provide new translations - use system fonts, pango rendering, right-to left text layout - right-to-left layout of viewers etc. ... and surely quite some more that I forgot right now. We should file tickets for those ... Now I'm on family vacation the next three weeks (and I really need some). Someone else will have to handle creating and uploading new RPMs and bundles. You'ld just start an activity somehow involving that file, right? So etoys would not be special in that regard. I agree etoys should not be the "default" activity dealing with, e.g., images, if there is more appropriate alternative. But offering to start a new etoys project based on some media file is reasonable IMHO. At least it makes discovering activities more obvious - how else should a kid find out which activities support which media? And pardon me, but how would opening a PNG in the browser be more desirable than opening it in Etoys? In Etoys a kid could at least *do* something with it. Like, add annotations. Or sound effects. Or cut out parts and make a collage. Have it bounce around on the screen. You know, fun, creative stuff, not just dumb watching. [Etoys] Build 537

The new etoys package is in builds starting at 537, please test thoroughly. In particular downloading projects and running them, and saving and loading projects from journal. I'm not sure if the Sugar fix for resuming went into this build, if not, you could apply it manually: http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/2477 Hopefully everything works and we can leave it at that for Trial-2. I'm a bit concerned about the UI which may be confusing to kids. To fit better with Sugar, we might want to remove the "load" button, and possibly the "prev" button, too (at least for "user-made" projects). At least load and save should not show the normal file directories but only the journal, and save actually could skip the directory choosing dialog completely. If we change the buttons, we might also update them to use the new icons (the design was changed this week to have gray outlines with white fill). Also the share button should change its appearance once shared ... guess that will have to wait, we need a better idea for sharing for trial-3 anyway. - Bert -
