(This is resend of off-list message. Attachment was stripped) ----- Hi. I am writing a simple MO reader. First cut is attached: I don't care performance for now. I tested it with japanese MOs bundled with Ruby-gettext package, as I don't have gettext runtime to compile POs for EToys right now. I think we need to decide for some design issues to go forward: a) How to package MO from those highly fragmented POs: how many MOs will we have? what is assigned to textdomain ? I am not certain whether current packaging scheme for POs will be also good for MO/textdomain. In typical usage textdomain represents "application" and translation is provided for each app. Also note that this decision will affect design for good performance and resource usage. b) how to decide textdomain on #translated? c) Where will MO reside in runtime environment? I am thinking about squeakland-OLPC with SecurityPlugin enabled. (Is security plugin enabled on XO ?) /Korakurider -------------------------------------- Easy + Joy + Powerful = Yahoo! [Etoys] Switching to 2.2 stream

I think Scott suggested switching to a 2.2 stream to be able to continue working, while 2.1 will be the "stable" version (in case we need to put any more updates into it for trial-3). I just created that "etoys2.2" stream, and also published a first update. To switch your image to the new version do "SystemVersion setVersion" and enter "etoys2.2". Then load updates, you should get update 1665. - Bert -

[Etoys] Smaller onion skin for painting

Hi, When presented with a large onion skin for sketches, I noticed kids tend to treat it like a large sheet of paper and draw whole pictures instead of drawing small objects and assembling them into widgets. The skin distorts the colors of objects already in the world, so kids shuffle it around when using color picker. Since Etoys is all about encouraging kids to assemble widgets, shouldn't the default size be reduced? I tried various sizes and found 320x300 to be a nice default. It leaves enough of the screen estate visible (for picking colors) while giving enough area to draw small objects. defaultPaintingExtent ^320 @ 300 Regards .. Subbu

Hi in between painting and renovating my new house I'm working on the botsinc environment for the ODLP. I got a project working. I removed all the behavior related to file and other aspects. Can someone have a look at tell me what I should improve? What is the process to get a project included in the project list? Are there guidelines about what I should pay attention to? Stef

[Etoys] Translating projects

One thing I thought about was making a Text object be translatable itself - when switching the locale we would store the previous translation in a dictionary (in a property of the object). Then the text could be edited, and when switching back, the old string would reappear. Hopefully we could make this behavior be the default, but it should be disabled from the halo menu, which could also show the other translations in a submenu. - Bert -

Howdy! I'm working with OLE Nepal (http://nepal.ole.org/) to introduce XOs into public schools here in Kathmandu. The plan is to write lots of Squeak-based educational software to supplement the standard curriculum in math and english so that the machines can be used in the classroom. I want to sort out a good and open collaborative development environment for writing the code. I'm wondering how you guys develop the XO Etoys image and what you would recommend to us? My first thought is to install Monticello via Squeakmap but I'm unable to do this cleanly due to apparent compatibility problems, which makes me wonder how other people are working. Advice welcome!
