Test release alpha 4 on the server

Hi I finally grokked VirtualBox and enough linux/unbuntu to make a new alpha release http://etoys.squeak.org/download/4.1/Etoys-To-Go-4.1.2-alpha4.zip I think there are some inconsistencies in this release/image... UGH! It seems video in Particle Dye project works once one update the image from update stream. I'm not sure why the video do not work out of the box... Thank you Bert for a nice write up of how to do the release process :-) Test and give feedback Karl

Hi Steve, I am glad to see this topic being discussed! With so many tablets coming out and so many people expecting to be able to touch their screens it seems like we really need to figure out how to add touch features to Etoys. It is will appeal to children's enthusiasm for touching the things they are curious about. Last year in Wilmington Bert had a start on an adaptation for the iPad. I know he was not satisfied that he had solved all the problems. Did you try it? I didn't try it but Avigail did and liked the idea. One of the problem areas for young users of Etoys is the size of the little green arrows, up,down, add functions etc. They are small and even though they get larger under the cursor they do present difficulties that will just be made worse if fingertips are at work. I have wondered if it would be a good idea to have sets of tiles be enlarged when the cursor is any place inside that area. If the cursor moved to another category of tiles, the first category would shrink back to the size it is now and the new area would increase to the larger size. This spring my students made Catch as Catch Can games and some of them included scripted magnifiers and round glass mags.Magnifiers make things under the cursor very readable and I think they would be large enough to be touched with a fingertip. The description of the Bamboo hover/click sounds interesting. I wish I could be more help to the developers; but so far the best help I can provide is to avoid asking for new features. The core developers team does an amazing job of moving ideas forward for releases. Thanks to everyone! sound recording in Ubuntu 11.04 etoys

Hello, I'm trying to use the sound recording tool under Ubuntu 11.04. Either etoys is freezing when I clic on the "record" button, or etoys quits when I clic on the "play" button. There is what is showed in the terminal : ---- etoys sound: /dev/mixer: Erreur d'entrée/sortie squeakvm: /build/buildd/squeak-vm-4.0.3.2202/unix/vm-sound-OSS/sqUnixSoundOSS.c :355 : dspOpen: L'assertion « dsp->fd < 0 » a échoué. Need help to build web projects gallery for school project

I'll need to build a web gallery of projects of younger students (7-9 years), but unable to use the old php script to list all the projects in a directory, because the current Etoys don't save project thumbnails (e.g. project.001.gif). It's possible to have a script that reads the png thumb inside the project and show it in a web page? Who can help? Thanks in advance. How will we handle multi-touch in Etoys? 1) Multiple Mice: When you touch the screen with multiple fingers you get "many mice" So, how can I get the mouseX and mouseY for each "mouse"? Thinking about this for my version of Slice it. So I can imagine one way would be a collection of mice, one could iterate through. 2) No Mouse Fat Fingers problem: A while back I had a conversation with an expert (some 17 or 18 year old kid who had built a Theremin remote control for his TV) and the idea came to me, I asked him about the power consumption, costs and if there were any interference issues and from the discussion it would seem this may be doable within XO-3 constraints. It would operate similar to the Bamboo Fun tablet which detects the stylus when it hovers over the tablet and you can move the mouse without touching the tablet, then it clicks when you touch the tablet. One issues I can foresee would be when you "hover" your finger over the screen if the mouse pointer is right under your finger, it would block the view of the pointer, so you would have to position the pointer "above" the finger. But then when you touch you are not "clicking" where you touch. Of course part of my problem my be I am thinking like a mouse ;) Stephen

eToys i18n analysis and suggestions

Dear eToys devs, Attached please find a comprehensive (but not necessarily complete) analysis of opportunities to make internationalization improvements in the eToys UI strings. I cannot guarantee that every comment made will (or should) result in changes, but I do believe that they all deserve careful consideration. Note: I originally tried to send with attachment, but it was too large for list filters. The spreadsheet can be found attached to this ticket http://tracker.squeakland.org/browse/SQ-950 as http://tracker.squeakland.org/secure/attachment/15092/All_eToys.ods In the attached spreadsheet. Column A is an overall sequential number of the strings, PO files are in alphabetical order. Sort on Column A to put them back in their original order in the PO files Column B are my comments. The numbers in Column B are simply to group strings that should be considered together. Sort on Column B to group together similar strings to consider merging. Column C is the filename of the originating PO file. Column D is the location string from the PO file. Column E is the strings themselves. Sort on Column E to look for more opportunities to merge strings Further explanation of my brief comments: The annotation "merge" in this context means that these strings are similar enough that it might be possible to harmonize them to a single spelling/format. Making these changes will result in fewer strings only in the cases where the variants occur in the same PO file (typically DrGeo), but it should also result in producing a more useful terminology PO file for eToys. This may seem trivial until you realize that (quit, Quit, QUIT and Quit:) all count as different strings to Pootle and to poterminilogy. This can multiply the number of strings for a localizer to translate and result in missed opportunities to include a common term in the Terminology project. The note "long, break up" suggests that this string might be easier for locaizers to handle if it were parsed into smaller consecutive strings rather than one long string. Yes, this will create more strings, not fewer, but they will be easier for locaizers to work with. The note "caps x" and "caps y" point out inconsistency in capitalizing the X or Y in strings where they refer to variables or geometric axes. Some strings may say "typo", but be correct, however, they will have a sister string where the typo occurs and notes have been made to make it easier to identify. The note "URL in caps" occurs where "url" has been incorrectly written in lowercase, URL is an acronym for Uniform Resource Locator and should be in caps. The note "CamelCase" raises the question of whether it is necessary to use CamelCase in this string. CamelCase is a geeky way of grouping terms, but it is very difficult for localizers to understand whether the concatenated string can be localized or not. It is better to group words into single terms by using quotation marks rather than using Camel Case. see Bert's comment in this message about CamelCase http://lists.squeakland.org/pipermail/etoys-dev/2011-June/006272.html I have not forgotten my promise to calculate a new glossary file specific to eToys. I got some excellent feedback on this issue from Dupuy, but I would like to see fi some of these suggested i18n improvements could be made as it would result in a better poterminology glossary calulation.
