If the VM feature is not really used and ephemerons are not used yet, what mechanism is currently used? Are we back to the old, slow implementation that is mentioned in the link that you gave?

One[1] that has never really been used in Squeak and has been
obsoleted by ephemerons. Even though we do not use ephemerons for
finalization yet.
