Hi All, New to this list. I submitted the following email to squeak-dev. Anyone here answer these? ======================= a few questions on the squeakland browser plugin for unix, if someone in-the-know can answer: Is the squeakland image special? (different from the regular ol' squeak images?) Is the vm different too? Or is the only difference the npspeak.so file and the symbolic link it creates (e.g. create symbolic link `/usr/lib/firefox-1.5/plugins/npsqueak.so' to `/usr/lib/squeak/3.7-7/npsqueak.so') I'm afraid the squeakland vm will overwrite my current vm. Is that needless worrying? Can I run them independently (that is without changing directories and creating links so they don't interfere in the "default" installation process) ======================= BTW: I receive this error: 'Error loading http://www.squeakland.org/uploads/WeaselEssay1.015/resource.10.form when loading the project on this page: http://www.squeakland.org/whatis/a_essays.html

Sometimes that still makes good publicity ... along the lines of the quote Alan likes: "If we want to make sure students learn math, we should make it illegal." or something like that. "Secret" is somewhat like illegal. Maybe all your efforts & our efforts should be labeled secret. Along the lines of having a big enough lever to move the world, he probably saw you pushing the board, saw the board, and the world. He just couldn't mentally see the fulcrum you are using... why open source, peer to peer, sharing big ideas in multimedia matters. Cheers, Darius

Hi -- The basic idea is that animation in Etoys is something for the children to learn how to program it (it's one of many uses of the powerful idea "increase by"). So it's not a "feature" or "productivity tool". If you look in the "collections" role of a holder, you will find a property "Holder's count" which keeps track of the number of elements that are in the particular holder. You can test this against the "Holder's cursor" position to see if you have gone through all the contents of the holder. The control of scripts is found under the role "scripting". Question about how to run an animation only once

Hi, I've been trying to discover how to run an animation only once, without success. If you click on the animation script's yellow question mark, it moves to the next cursor position. If you click on the clock, the script loops endlessly. I've explored the script menu, but nothing I've found so far has enabled me to run the animation one cycle through all the frames, then stop. How does one do that? Thanks, Randy

summary of Squeak course from BJA-C & KR book

I'd like to say thanks to B.J. Allen-Conn & Kim Rose for the excellent book that is, "Using Squeak to Enhance Math and Science Learning." I was looking for material to get a first course in Squeak going locally with the science club students, and after fretting that I probably would never have enough time to create a proper class curriculum for experimenting with Squeak without significanly more time spent creating and exploring, I bought the book mentioned above. Wow, that was an answer to prayer. I ended up working with a group of students for 2 hours, and here is some of the feedback, just as an FYI and a big thank you to those responsible: - the university students and professors were wonderful class assistants, I basically used the first 4 to 5 projects unaltered - students registered ahead of time and had 2 hours to go through the first 4 or 5 projects which were instructor led - there were 13 students registered, 10 attended: ages: 8 years old - 1 10 years old - 1 12 years old - 4 13 years old - 2 14 years old - 2 - questions answered on survey filled out after course: "I learned about Squeak today" 10 agree, 0 disagree "I would like to learn more about Squeak" 10 agree, 0 disagree "The speed & pace was" 7 just right, 3 too fast "Squeak is fun" 10 agree, 0 disagree "Teachers & Assistants are helpful" 10 agree, 0 disagree - specific suggestions received: 1) longer session, wanted to do more 2) it was fun and you should do more presentations 3) make workshop 2 hours and 30 minutes, not 2 hours 4) it was cool 5) it was well presented and I learned enough to keep experimenting - I'm looking forward to attending SqueakFest 2006 this Summer and plan to have follow-up classes when school starts up again -- there certainly was interest in continuing to learn and do more Thanks again to B.J. Question about superSwikis and sharing projects

Hi, I'm using the Squeak image for Macintosh from squeakland.org. By going into the Navigator flap and first clicking on "Find" , then highlighting "Squeakland-Projects" and loading "Sliders with Animation.002.pr", a demo is loaded which mentions another, more basic demo for making a simple two-frame animation, which is said to be in the "Introduction to Squeak" image. Does anyone know where this image can be found? I tried looking for it in the SuperSwiki at http://squeakland.org:8080/super , but that site returns a 404 "page not found" message. I also tried "Bob's SuperSwiki" at http://209.143.91.36/super , but that takes me to a page selling a drug to prevent male-pattern hair loss. Any tips on where to find repositories of eToys projects would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Randy

Hi all, Is it right to assume that the "project.jsp" code creates an html file for the downloading of a .pr project? Is the "project.jsp" code available? I'm in the process of looking through the npsqueak plugin code and I'd like to see the client side too.
