Lack of documentation frustrating

Hi, I am volunteering at a local school, and will be doing squeakland once a week with some fifth graders. Squeakland (etoys?) seems ideal for these kids, except that I'm frustrated by the lack of documentation. I've spent ages looking through the website and searching online, and I can't really find the kinds of things I'm looking for. I went through some of the tutorials myself, and those will be great to get started, but I would like to give the kids fairly free reign, and be able to answer most of their questions. I tried to do some little projects myself, but I kept coming up with seemingly simple things I wanted to do, and not finding any obvious way to do them (or, as I say, any documentation suitable for answering the questions). For example: I wanted to make an etoy follow the mouse pointer around. I can't see any way of even obtaining a reference to a mouse object. I would also like to do loops and suchlike. Not obvious how to do that. I can see that if I can dive down into the smalltalk level, I could do it, but this seems like the kind of thing that's probably at the squeakland (etoy? What do I call the kids' environment?) level. But as I say, what I'm really looking for is not this particular fish, but how to fish for myself. I would buy a book, but the one pointed at from the website appears to just be a set of projects, rather than the kind of documentation I'm looking for. Squeak: Learn Programming by Controlling Robots looks like it might be sort of what I'm looking for, although I'm interested in a broader range of Squeakland projects than just the turtle graphics mentioned in the summary of the book. So: where is the documentation it seems ought to be there? Thanks.

When to define a local variable

Hi, I am a newbie trying to learn Squeak. The squeak book and tutorials says that I need to define a local variable using a pipe like below: | someMuppet | someMuppet := Muppet new. someMuppet name: 'Elmo'. someMuppet greet. But when I tried the same code without defining a local variable shown below, I got the expected results, which makes me wonder when I should define a local variable. anotherMuppet := Muppet new. anotherMuppet name: 'Gookie Monster'. anotherMuppet greet. My guess is that I need not define a local variable if my code is being executed within a Workspace because all variables such as anotherMuppet will have "Workspace" scope. Can anyone please explain in more detail about variable scopes? Thanks in advance. Young-Jin Lee

Bug on Bookmorph and a Question about Weasell Esay

Hi all, This list has been a little silent these days (I thing that it is because of the movement on the OLPC etoys mailing list). So let's move the list a little :-). I have been working with my students on Squeak and they have found a bug on Bookmorph. When they create a book with markers (I think that is the english translation for "señaladores") and export it as a pr file, when they open it again the markers just simply vanished. I have probe this with Extremadura's Squeak and with Squeakland and the behavior is the same. In the last one I get this messages: a SimpleButtonMorph (3606) that was not counted a SimpleButtonMorph (992) that was not counted I have attached the project. Other thing is that some pr files looks fine in the firefox browser with the squeak plugin: http://superswikifr.ofset.org:8000/super/launcher?KedamaJeuVieDidac.001.pr but others don't: http://squeakland.org/project.jsp?http://users.info.unicaen.fr/~alardill/UE… and the squeak plugin just try to load the project with any success. Finally I was trying to make an example of why squeak books are not "like power point" using an active essay and I used the Weasel Essay on evlution with mutation of characters. In this essay there are embedded scripts in the pages of the stack that are different from what we're used on "classical etoys". They look more like Tweak scripts. ¿There is any pointer to documentation on that feature? correction of bug

Hi, This little change set will correct a bug about translation. If you have some watcher for system variables, like heading, of a morph renaming the morph will change the label for the watchers. The name of the variable is no more translated. The attached change set will correct this. This change set could be added in the next update of the image. Best regards

Greetings! Thanks to the continued interest and generosity of Columbia College Chicago, we are delighted to announce SqueakFest '07! The dates for this year's gathering are: August 1, 2 & 3 Hands-on Workshops Wednesday, August 1st Keynotes, presentations & panels Thursday and Friday, August 2 & 3 SqueakFest is open to educators, parents (homeschoolers, other) developers, community technology center leaders, etc., etc. -- anyone interested in working with Squeak Etoys. This year we're planning a special track on the One Laptop Per Child Initiative ($100 laptop) and welcome participation by Etoy content developers for this particular platform in addition to those using or planning to use Squeak Etoys on other computing platforms. (For those who may be unaware, Squeak Etoys is currently one offering provided on the $100 laptop which is being distributed in great quantity this year.)
