Learnable Programming

Great essay by Bret Victor on "Designing a programming system for understanding programs": http://worrydream.com/LearnableProgramming/ He clearly explains what makes a programming system "learnable". While Etoys does not do all of it, many of its features fit right in, in particular as compared to other widely used programming systems. An Etoys project can be always running, changes have effect immediately, all state is visible (through the readouts in viewers) and most of the state can be changed directly (e.g. by dragging up and down the number arrows), tiles have default arguments so they do something useful immediately, there is an explanation (balloon help) for each tile, etc. And maybe this essay inspires some improvements to Etoys :) - Bert -

Hi everyone, Today, Waveplace is very excited to announce a new software project … Tidepool .. a place to play and learn. Taking the experience we’ve gained over the last five years teaching Sugar, Etoys, and Scratch in places like Haiti and Nicaragua, we’ve decided to create a brand-new learning system, one that furthers the cause of constructionist learning through a multi-touch interface, open API, and new programming paradigm. When will it be available? When it’s ready. We’re currently in the alpha stage with our core group of twelve collaborators. We’ll start an open beta sometime in 2013. Hello, I thought you might enjoy reading this article about Etoys and the Etoys Pilot in Unit 4 Schools. Sadly, the person who wrote the headline has incorrectly attributed the software to the University of Illinois. The reporter has the facts correct in the article but the headline editor must not have read the article well. I have sent a note asking for a correction to be published, but that is never the same, is it. My apologies to all the developers. It is, however, great publicity for our pilot of Etoys in Champaign middle schools. I heard today that the city newspaper is doing interviews for an article and a local TV station has started filming for a story too. Need help with a "Candy Snatcher Detector" project

I have a group of kids and we are working on building a Candy Snatcher Detector. We are using a Makey Makey we built Candy Detectors and can tell when a kid takes more than one candy. The kids also build two versions of a "Silly String Shooter" which will shoot the offending Candy Snatcher. The problem we are trying to solve is how to trigger the Silly String Shooter. In one version they are using Lego NXT to fire the Silly String. (we may switch to Arduino in one version, but I would still need to trigger the Arduino from Scratch). In the other they build a pneumatic lever, which will probably also be run from NXT. We had the following ideas: 1) Have the Scratch program trigger the lighting of an LED, which a carefully constructed NXT light sensor could detect and then fire the silly string 2) Somehow send a signal to the NXT from Scratch 3) Have a small section of the screen (which we have the light detector pointing toward (with light shields so it only sees one small corner) and we change the color from black to white on that section when we want to fire the NXT. Okay, having asked this, I realized Ricardo and team have built Physical Etoys <http://tecnodacta.com.ar/gira/projects/physical-etoys/> (which I will be downloading and playing with shortly, about time!!!) Ricardo, Does Physical Etoys support Scratch Connect? If not, can I simply load in the ScratchConnect-ky.6.mcz<http://www.squeaksource.com/ScratchConnect/ScratchConnect-ky.6.mcz> from squeaksource? Hi everyone. I wanted you to know that a project a long time in the making is finally available for people to use. My students have been working on curricula for young children for three years, and we now have enough to actually populate a website. http://www.columbusschoolforgirls.net/etoys Included are sets of lessons in music, art, malaria, sanitation, and various booklets and other teaching resources we've developed over the years. Where appropriate we've worked with teachers who know the subjects so that we can get a sense of what's actually taught in these different areas. All work was done by high school girls. All is free for you to use. In fact, we would LOVE for you to use it if possible. It's incredibly motivating to know that someone "out there" is actually using your work. Randall, Moved the conversation to the Squeakland list (squeakland(a)squeakland.org) One thing to double check is that your colors are exactly right. You may want to try resetting them (click on the color in the Test, then on the color you want). Also your *No* in the first test, seems to execute the exact same test. So it will never get to that *Yes*. Etoys for touch screens

Good Morning All, The link is to a set of Etoys projects for the Orpheum Children's Science Museum in Champaign,Illinois. http://etoysillinois.org/library?tags=At%20the%20Orpheum The director asked that the projects be made for very young visitors to play with independently using the smart board in the museum's lobby. How to share in 5.0?

The online manual, which appears to cover 4.0, says I should have a circle-with-a-dot-in-the-middle button in my toolbar that enables me to share with other users, presumably on the local LAN. But my copy of 5.0 doesn’t show this button. In the object catalog, I can find Nebraskaserver and Badge, but no information about how to use them, and I can’t work out how to use them by myself. Which leads to: sharing is either removed (why?) or carefully hidden (why?) and poorly or not documented (why?). I’m going to be demoing eToys for my school district’s technology committee soon, and being able to show that it can share would help to convince them to start using eToys. Thanks.
