64 bit cleanup completion?

It's been a while since the 64 bit cleanup work was started and almost as long since anything much was done with it. There are a number of plugins that need some work to get rid of things like cCoerce:to: in favour of oopForPointer: etc. There are places with #flag: Dan lying around and Dan has expressed a lack of time to do anything with them but a willingness to sit with someone and a beer to explain what he was thinking of. I'm not going to be heading down to silicon valley anytime soon so I certainly can't do that but anyone that can take notes could do it and report back. Example surface plugin

File and directory primitives are severely broken

Many of the file primitives allocate 1000-byte buffers for path names and pass their address to functions defined in support code, without passing their length or in any way trying to agree with support code about what the maximum length of a path name should be. Directory primitives are worse: in one place a 256-byte buffer is allocated on the stack and expected to be sufficient for any directory entry. Here's the portable way to fix this without changing any of the APIs. I suggest everyone who maintains a platform check that they do indeed have <limits.h> (its availability is mandated by ANSI C) and once nobody reports it missing that this header file be included at the beginning of sq.h. All occurrences of char buf[1000]; or char entryName[256]; that allocate space for path names in the file and directory prims should then be changed to read char buf[PATH_MAX]; before one of these ticking time bombs explodes in someone's face. FWIW: The Unix VM uses PATH_MAX religiously when checking for over- length, or allocating space for, path names. (This is the correct thing to do.) On OS X PATH_MAX is 1024; on Linux it's 4096. New VMMaker on SM

After the mild confusion on SM uploading etc, I can now reassure everyone that the package you get when downloading the VMMaker-3.8b6 is actually the latest version including the fix to forceInterruptCheck. Contextualizing the VM environment?

Hi Guys - While looking at some of the meta aspects of Croquet I found that one of the most problematic issues with code replication is that we really can't separate code bases entirely. That's because there are various references to "special" classes or objects that the VM knows about and uses in very intricate ways (like contexts, compact classes etc). One thought I had was that (unless I'm horribly mistaken) all of these special objects originate in the specialObjectsArray - as a matter of fact it seems that the splObjects are really *the* root of the system (besides the active context). So I had this crazy thought that I'd like some comments on: What would happen if we changed the VM so that we fetch the specialObjects array from the active process? In other words, each process could potentially carry its own VM environment which effectively describes its own variant of the VM state. With the effect being that different processes could potentially have different versions of class SmallInteger etc. The basic question here is: Can you guys see any reason why this *wouldn't* work? Is there anything I'm overlooking? Any situations in which this would cause problems while (say) interrupt processing or somesuch? Cheers, - Andreas

New VMMaker package on SqueakMap

SM now has VMMaker3.8-b6 ready for your delight and desperation. It works for me with SVN #1444 off squeakvm.org and so far as I can tell is now up to date with all the suggested changes I can find and approve.
