Joys of Squeak-dev image, VM Compiling on MacIntel and Spoon remote OtherBrowsing

MacPro OS X 10.4.9 Xcode 2.4.1 Squeak-dev-114-2, VMMaker 2.8b6.1, Squeak 3.8.15beta6U.app, and version 1657 of svn MacOS VM sources, and Spoon v2a12. Downloaded http://www.squeakvm.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/ trunk version 1657 for MacOS Ran squeak-dev-beta-114-2.image on Squeak 3.8.15beta6U.app Loaded VMMaker 3.8b6.1 from dev image Universes. Generated vm sources by following instructions in <http://www.squeakvm.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/trunk/platforms/Mac%20OS/vm/Doc…> Fought with Xcode wanting to use MacOSX10.3.9.sdk for ppc which was giving an error which was known and documented in the Readme. Finally figured out what Xcode wanted so built universal app just using 10.4.9 sdk. Couple issues: Exupery references remain in sqnamedPrims.h and sqPlatformSpecific.h from svn version 1657, I just commented them out. Notes said: Info-NPSqueak__Upgraded_.plist was to be found in the Developer directory. I could not find it so scammed a info.plist out of John's Squeak 3.8.15beta6U.app vm. Not sure what impact this has. And much, much diddling about figuring out various things... Finally got a build. It's a lot smaller (3.9MB) than John McIntosh's Squeak 3.8.15beta6U.app (8.1MB), and it looks like it is a PowerPC one but at least it runs. I'll look into the Xcode build process some more. Then: Replaced interp.c with Craig's interp.c for Spoon, rebuilt and got a VM with Spoon client stuff. Downloaded Spoon release 2a12. Moved a copy of Flow plugin from within Craig's naiad.app package into a plugins subdirectory where the new spoon client compatible MacIntel universal VM was run from. Followed Craig's Spoon instructions for loading niaid.st and niaid.pr into the 3.10 image (Squeak-dev-114-2) running on the new VM. Did the run spoon.app thing from Spoon.dmg (version 2a12), needs to be done twice if Safari is not running. Got Spoon processor running. Followed instructions again in the Spoon client and lo! Got OtherBrowser browsing the Spoon memory running on processor. Yay Craig! Who do i get to sign my certificate? :) Ken

linux 64bit vm running a 32 bit images - networking vm crash

hi, i am running a 64bit vm (elf64 / x86_64) linux, no i have no 32bit compat x11 libs and i dont want to have them... the vm crashes on any network operation, any clues? X window handling

Hi Ian, David, I think you're the experts for Squeak X window handling ... What would be needed to modify the Unix VM to not open a window until the beDisplay() primitive is called? That's how the Mac and Acorn VMs handle things, making headless operation controllable from the image. David, I guess this would be similar to how your XDisplayControl plugin works? Secondly, what's your estimate of making the host window support work? It is implemented on Win and Mac VMs but not X11 yet. It basically is just some primitives to open, close, resize, and move windows, and display bits, plus the event reporting to the image needs to set a window index field. For OLPC I need the ability to have multiple top-level windows, and I need to know their XID from the image. I only ever need to draw and handle events in the top-most window since all windows are full- screen (*). That means the full host window plugin support isn't actually needed, but I think it still makes sense because OLPC development continues on Mac and Win, too. If at all sensible I'd like to avoid OLPC-specific bits in the VM. Besides, more folks seem to be interested in multiple window support. Anyway, what's the best way to approach this? Anybody taking it on? Or at least lending me a hand? ;) - Bert - (*) I tried to convince the OLPC folks to support multiple activity instances (**) sharing a single X window but so far I failed. Thus, byte data reach the VM in UTF8 representation. Unicode clipboard in Windows

Ok i am trying to brake down the clipboard-responsible code so that i can add unicode clipboard support.. the news are not so good. First, i saw that the code for sending text to the clipboard is int clipboardWriteFromAt(int count, int byteArrayIndex, int startIndex) in sqWin32Window.c The thing is that we are trying to create a fully Unicode VM...this means that the characters that are sent to the VM are Unicode (> 256) and we are using a unicode TT font to render them. Now... when i evaluate this c:=Clipboard new. c primitiveClipboardText:'?' "? is unicode char 945" the clipboardWriteFromAt is never invoked. That's because in interp.c at sqInt primitiveClipboardText(void) the following expression is evaluated to TRUE if (!(((s & 1) == 0) && (((((usqInt) (longAt(s))) >> 8) & 15) >= 8))) { /* begin primitiveFail */ successFlag = 0; printf("primitive failed 1\n"); "This printf is mine" return null; } Now what in earth is THIS? I think i am starting to abandon the fully-unicode vision and follow your instructions from the start to use code pages and preserve the internal representation of Squeak... Download a fresh 3.9-7067, install Nile-All from monticello (http://www.squeaksource.com/Nile/). WM_UNICHAR for handling Unicode

I don't think we will be able to use WM_UNICHAR (at least that easy)... > WM_UNICHAR documentation is wrong. This message is not generated by the OS, but by other applications ( such as Office). as stated in http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.platformsdk.ui/browse_threa… There are some apps that say they have WM_UNICHAR support but i couldn't sort it out... And the MSDN documentation is crap... So, i guess we'll stick with Unicode-registered application window (at least for now) ... Christos
