I think it'd be useful to push harder on this issue. VisualWorks 
certainly had a messy heritage in this regard, but is consistent now.. 
encoded, they're bytes, decoded, they're strings.

If Seaside-Platform set the rules, would everybody fix up their codecs? 
Right now, the code I wrote to implementing string->string ends up doing 
a changeClassTo:
