is ANSI a good thing?

I wasn't on the X committee, but the drafts of the document make it clear that
the standard attempts to address the common elements of existing
Smalltalk dialects and provide a common interchange format for them to share.
Since there is no consensus on UI frameworks (not even MVC) the draft
studiously avoided any attempt to specify UI classes and interfaces.

As my friend DavidC pointed out to me many moons ago, "A good standard
avoids all of the hard problems."
