Two-Year Post-Graduate Research Jobs: Distributed Multimedia Processing and
VR Systems

The Center for Research in Electronic Art Technology (CREATE) at UC Santa
Barbara in California is starting a multi-year advanced R&D project in the
areas of distributed virtual environments for large-scale simulation. Our
tasks are related to the two topic areas of (a) software for distributed
processing over high-speed networks using such technologies as CORBA, UDP,
and ATM and (b) input and output techniques for virtual environments,
including input device gesture mapping and multi-channel spatialized sound
output. For project details, see http://www.create.ucsb.edu/ATON

We have current funding for two two-year full-time appointments (with
possible extension) for advanced post-graduate research associates in the
areas of (1) software for distributed processing over high-speed networks,
including CORBA, wireless networks, etc. and (2) input and output techniques
for virtual environments (VEs) including input device gesture mapping and
multi-channel spatialized sound output.

1: Post-graduate Research Associate level V -- Distributed Processing

Tasks include design and implementation of advanced software in C, C++,
Java, and/or Smalltalk; performance measurement of CORBA ORBs relative to
socket-level programming and other distributed processing methods;
specification and implementation of a high-level API for time-critical
distributed programming; and the supervision of 2-3 graduate student
researchers.

Desired skills include advanced knowledge of C, C++, Java, and/or Smalltalk;
experience with high-speed networking, ATM, RSVP, IPv6 etc.; experience with
distributed processing, CORBA, COM, UDP, etc.; good spoken and written
English.

Salary dependent upon experience plus liberal benefits, project budget for
conference travel, support, etc. Full consideration given to applications
received by 3-15-00; position will remain open until filled. Terms and
conditions of employment are subject to UC policy .

Submit letter of application, vita, and arrange for three letters of
recommendation to be sent to: JoAnn Kuchera-Morin, Program Director, Center
for Research Electronic Art Technology (CREATE), Department of Music,
University of California, Santa Barbara, CA 93106-6070. An EO/AA Employer.
