Can you explain why you think these are the only alternatives?  As I tried 
to explain, I think, for user acceptance, it's sufficient to come up with a 
meta-look and feel that has the essence of the usual platforms UIs (Mac, 
Windows, KDE, Gnome)

Which is the way to go IMHO.  But not for something completely different 
but for the essential look.  I don't give too much on Tim's 
rant.  Parcplace might have failed but Sun successed with Swing.
