I took this as the reference, that's why I'm surprised:
"On a 400 MHz PII/Win98: 18028169 bytecodes/sec; 1081272 sends/sec"
Well, the comment doesn't say anything about the VM.
So I tested an older one:
2.7 RB 8
'31403336 bytecodes/sec; 2056941 sends/sec'
What a difference in the bytecodes/sec!
