[SF][Unix][VM] Makefile.in GNU-make dependent

I built a Solaris version with gcc and gnu make. I then
spent an entire 5 minutes or so trying it with the Solaris
make and the Solaris compiler. Solaris make barfed a lot...
Rumor has it that the Sun compile generates noticeably
better code than gcc. There is at least one other person
(SMA) that was interested.
