For what it's worth, I'm using the IRIX VM posted and have great success running
against and image and changes file created under V2.8a under NT.  I too
experienced problems getting V2.7 upgrade to proceed but then when I just copied
the working image suite over from my V2.8a NT machine it has worked perfectly.

Make sure you have sound turned off.
