While people are discussing immutable strings, someone should check out
ICON.  In ICON, strings are immutable data objects but they are also kept
uniquely in StringSpace.
The result is that strings become values in their own right.
StringQualifiers uniquely identify string slices.
  ICON also has very high level string scanning facilities.
