Given that the numbers you posted seem to reflect the (expected, I would think) cost of converting 8-bit squeak colors to 32-bit OS colors (and I suspect the cost of doing the gradients nicely in 8 bits to begin with), it would be interesting to see whether FreeCell in 2.9 feels better when Squeak is set to 32 bits. The question of what happened between 2.7 and 2.9 remains, but 2.9 (or any version, for that matter) may be more pleasant when the Squeak depth matches the OS depth.
