So I tried this in a virgin MacOS 9.1 image, with only the Apple 
standard extensions -- and it plays fine.  So, the problem is 
probably some non-standard extension or background process.  I 
guessed that it might be keyquencer, Time Synchronizer, FBC indexer 
... but I still get the same problem with off of these gone.  But it 
must be one of them there extensions ...

On to binary search, I suppose.  In any case, it seems not to be a 
Squeak problem.  Sorry to bother the list.
